The History of PHunky...

When ‘Pams House’ first started back in the mid Nineties the Big Room sound was very Vocal House – some called it ‘Handbag House’. As time moved on more genres were formed to accommodate varying musical tastes. ‘Pams House’ has evolved over the years to maintain its Big Room following, through Trance in the late Nineties & early Noughties to the Harder Trance & Hard House in the mid Noughties & present day.

As the main room sound got harder it was decided to offer an alternative option for those who still wanted to hear the funkier more vocal tunes, ……so in the year of the new Millennium ‘PHunky’ was born…

‘PHunky’ offered a playground for the, some say, more mature clubbers who have grown out of the main room & prefer more intimate surroundings but still like the naughtiness of being involved with ‘Pams House’.

Creating the name was simple – ‘PHunky’ summed up the night’s musical direction & the type of people it attracted and the PH gave the ‘P’ams ‘H’ouse twist.

‘PHunky’ has continued to work hand in hand with ‘Pams House’ featuring in the second room of most of the big UEA events and wherever its possible to have an ancillary room.. A formula which to this day has been very successful.

The original resident DJ was Basil Hayes who was instrumental in launching the brand but he was soon followed by current resident Jay Funk who took the event to new levels - his unique style, technical ability and personality often outshone many of the Big name guest DJ’s. Jamie Hales came into the fold in 2002 and offered some very crowd pleasing sets while Paul Cossey joined the resident team after winning a PHunky idol competition and a set at the 8th Birthday Ball, he soon won a small army of fans at the Norwich based events.

Scotty George joined the PHunky family, late 2004, and was a key figure in securing the Po Na Na Parties – the first stand alone ‘PHunky’ parties. After breaking all records on the launch party, a monthly then twice monthly party soon followed. After hosting regular events at Norwich’s home of house music for over a year PHunky now takes on the 5th Fridays which usually occur 4 times a year. Scott has recently joined the DJ team under the guise of George Whirlwind alongside new PHunky residents Harry Pearce & Alex Par-T. Other regular guests include Benjammin, Nicky Fingers, John Charles, the Spin Monkeys & Wozza.

There have been a number of top draw guest DJs over the years including Alex P, Alister Whitehead, Brandon Block, Boy George, Griff & Jay Manumission, Graham Park, Gee Moore (Bora Bora) Gordon Edge, Howard Donald (Take That) Jonathan Ulysses, K Klass, Kate Lawler, Prok & Fitch, Rebekah, Soul Avengerz, Sharp Boys, Sonique, Trophy Twins and Yousef. PHunky also co-hosted the house arena at Summerfest which featured house giants Erick Morillo & the Shapeshifters.

After dabbling with a techier / more electro sound during the 2006 & early part of 2007 PHunky have made a decision to go back to roots and keep the Funky in ‘PHunky’. So, moving forward the music policy will be very vocal, very housey & always uplifiting. You can expect the odd classic tune or two brought to you by some big name guests, live PA’s and musician accompaniment –

The futures Bright, the futures PHunky!!!
